Lab reports are the most formulaic writing you will do at university, which should make them easy marks. Most students lose those marks in two places: a method written as instructions rather than as a record, and a discussion that describes results instead of explaining them.
"Heat the solution to 60°C" is a lab manual instruction. "The solution was heated to 60 ± 1°C using a water bath" is a method. Include equipment with model or specification where it matters, quantities, concentrations, and the conditions of measurement. The test is reproducibility: could a competent reader repeat this and get comparable data? Do not copy the manual — reporting what you actually did, including any deviation, is the point.
Tables carry raw and processed data with units in the column headings, not repeated in every cell. Graphs need labelled axes with units, sensible scales, error bars where you have uncertainties, and a caption below. Number every table and figure and refer to each by number in the text. Include a sample calculation showing how raw data became processed data — many rubrics award marks for it directly.
Start by answering the aim directly. Then compare your result with theory or the accepted value and account for the difference using your error analysis. If the experiment did not work as expected, say what happened and explain it physically — a well-analysed anomaly earns more than a result quietly rounded towards the textbook. Finish with concrete improvements: a specific instrument, a larger sample, a controlled variable you could not control this time.
