Objectives are your research questions restated as purposes, and examiners read them as a contract: this is what the study set out to do, so this is what the findings must deliver. Vague objectives make that contract impossible to satisfy.

The general objective states the overall purpose in one sentence. It should be broad enough to cover every specific objective and no broader — if it promises something no specific objective delivers, you have written an aim for a bigger study than the one you are doing.
Specific objectives break that purpose into steps you can actually complete. Each one should map to a method, a section of your analysis and a part of your findings. Three to five is the usual range; more than five is almost always a scope problem rather than a thoroughness signal.
"To understand", "to study", "to look into" and "to explore the importance of" cannot be demonstrated. In a viva you cannot show that you understood something, and an examiner cannot mark it.
Measurable verbs can be evidenced: describe, identify, measure, compare, determine, assess, evaluate, examine, analyse. Each names an operation that leaves a trace in your dissertation — a table, a test, a themed section. If you cannot point to where an objective was met, rewrite the verb.
Objectives, research questions, methods and findings should line up one-to-one. Objective 2 is answered by question 2, addressed by a method described in chapter 3, and reported in a section of chapter 4. Examiners check this alignment directly, and gaps in it are among the most common major corrections.
The practical test: write your objectives in a column and name the findings section that answers each. An objective with no section is either unmet or unnecessary. A findings section with no objective means you collected data you never planned to — which needs justifying.
Objectives read best in the order the work happens: describe the situation, identify the factors involved, compare or test relationships, then evaluate and recommend. That sequence mirrors how a findings chapter unfolds and makes the dissertation easy to follow.
Put recommendation objectives last, and only where your own data can support them. Recommendations that restate the literature rather than following from your findings are a standard criticism in feedback — and an easily avoided one.
The SMART framework transfers reasonably well: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound. Research objectives are usually specific, measurable, achievable and relevant, with the time-bound element supplied by the study period rather than by the objective itself.
Do not force a deadline into the wording. "To assess X among Y in Z during 2024–25" is time-bound because it names the study period; it does not need to promise when you will finish writing.
