How to Write a Research Proposal for a Master's Dissertation

The research proposal is short — often 1,500 to 3,000 words — but it decides how the next six months go. A vague proposal gets approved eventually and then produces a dissertation that drifts. A tight one makes the writing almost mechanical, because every chapter already has its brief.

Narrow until the question is researchable

"The impact of social media on consumer behaviour" is a field, not a question. "How does influencer credibility affect purchase intention among UK undergraduates for skincare products?" names the variables, the population and the context, and it tells you what data to collect. The test: if you cannot say what you would measure or ask, keep narrowing.

What a proposal contains

Working title — specific, and revisable later.
Background and rationale — the context and why this matters now.
Problem statement, research questions and objectives — usually one aim and three or four objectives.
Preliminary literature review — organised by theme, ending in an explicit gap.
Methodology — design, participants and sampling, data collection, analysis plan.
Ethical considerations, limitations, timeline and references.

The gap has to be argued, not asserted

Supervisors are unconvinced by "little research exists in this area" — it usually means little searching has been done. Show the field: here is what has been established, here is where studies disagree, and here is the population, variable, method or time period nobody has examined. A gap can be geographic, demographic, methodological or temporal. Naming which kind it is makes the argument concrete.

Methodology must match the questions

The most common rejection is a mismatch: a question asking how people experience something, paired with a 200-person questionnaire; or a question about the relationship between two variables, paired with six interviews. Walk each research question through your method and ask what data it would produce and whether that data answers the question. State your design, sampling strategy and sample size with justification, your instrument, and the specific analysis technique — thematic analysis, multiple regression, ANOVA — not just "the data will be analysed".

Ethics and feasibility decide approval

Name your participants and how you will recruit them — access is the most common practical failure.
Cover consent, withdrawal, anonymity, data storage and any vulnerable-group considerations.
Flag anything that needs full ethics committee review early; it can take weeks.
Give a timeline with dates that fits your submission deadline, including a buffer for delays.

Before you submit it

Check the chain: does each objective map to a research question, does each question map to a method, and does each method produce data your analysis plan can handle? Then check the practical side — if the sample would take four months to recruit and you have three, the proposal will come back regardless of how good the idea is.
