Design rationale is an argument

A design rationale is assessed as a piece of reasoning, not as a description of what was drawn. Site constraints, orientation, circulation, programme and precedent should each be shown to have driven a decision, and the decisions should be traceable back to them.

The strongest rationales say what was rejected. Explaining why a courtyard scheme was abandoned for a linear plan after daylight analysis demonstrates the iterative thinking that studio work is meant to evidence.
